In 1492...Columbus Sailed

Christopher Columbus for kindergarten could be a stretch, but using books, songs, art and writing can help this historical person come to life.
I know this post is late...sorry.  Crazy week at work, but next week will be better.  That being said, I am posting this anyway.

In 1492...Read a Book

One of my favorite books for Columbus Day is In 1492 by Jean Marzollo.  The book is written in rhyme and engages the students.  We read the entire book Monday.  Then, we refer back to portions of the book throughout the week.  There are several other books for students.

In 1492...Vocabulary Cards

There are new faces, places, and vocabulary with this unit.  Allowing for students to manipulate the words and pictures in writing and in centers, creates an in depth understanding for the students.  They can use the words in a variety of ways: alphabetizing the list, categorizing the list, and writing using the list.

In 1492...Sing a Song

As everyone in who teaches kindergarten knows, if they can sing it they will learn it.  Christopher Columbus is no different.  There are basic arms motions I made up or each verse.  The repeated refrain "Columbus sailed the ocean blue, in 1492" I make the children wave their hand in a wavy ocean.

In 1492...Make a Ship

Everyone has a ship art project.  Any Mayflower ship project can be amended to make a Santa Maria project. We add the poem to one of the flags and we should have added a red cross to the flags.

In 1492...Write about it!

You know I lo ve my 4 square writing.  The week after next, I put the Columbus 4 Square in the writing center.  Let them write about what they learned...it's such a great way to check of understanding.
